Gaythorne RSL Remembrance Day Writing Competition

Tuesday, 15 November 2011 12:00 in Ryan Events

The Gaythorne RSL Remembrance Day writing competition was a great success this year with wonderful entries from local students. Jane was delighted to present some of the awards for the outstanding literary offerings. A much appreciated surprise on the night was the gift of $6000 from the RSL to St William’s Catholic Primary School to sponsor their 2012 Year 7 trip to Canberra. Students will visit Parliament House and the War Memorial as well as other significant sites and facilities.

The Gaythorne RSL and President Merv Brown work tirelessly – not just for their RSL members but also the wider community. This is a wonderful boost to St William’s and will ensure a very memorable experience for their students. I hope to welcome them on their arrival at Parliament House!

Jane Prentice MP and RSL President Merv Brown present the cheque to the thrilled and grateful St William's School.

Petition for a Boer War Memorial

Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:32 in Ryan Events

I recently met with members and friends of the Queensland Branch of the Boer War Memorial Association.

I am pleased to support their efforts in seeking funding for a Boer War Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra, to honour the service and sacrifice of the 23,000 or so men and women of Australia who served our country in the Boer War of 1899 - 1902, of whom around 1,000 gave their lives. These same men and women laid down the foundations for the Australian Defence Force which has served our country so well these past 110 years.

Please consider signing the petition to support the Boer War Memorial Association, which can be obtained by contacting my office or by clicking on the link below:

Congratulations to the many local schools and RSL clubs who organised Anzac Day services and ceremonies around the Ryan electorate. I had the pleasure of attending a number of very moving services on Anzac Day and I thank the local community who turned out in such numbers.

Australian Defence Medal Presentation

Wednesday, 13 April 2011 14:08 in Ryan Events

Recently, I was privileged to present Gunner Steven Castleman and Second Lieutenant Gary Fooks with the Australian Defence Medal. Together with Wing Commander George Hodgson, representing the Australian Defence Force, and Merv Brown, President of the Gaythorne RSL, I had the honour of formally acknowledging and thanking these service men and their families for their significant contribution to Australia.

The medal recognises current and former Australian Defence Force Regular and Reserve Personnel, volunteer and national servicemen, for their efforts in the defence of our national interest. Our defence forces make a great contribution to our nation both away and at home. Congratulations and thank you once again to Steven Castleman, Gary Fooks, and their families, for allowing me to share such an important occasion with them.

Small Business forum with Tony Abbott

Wednesday, 30 March 2011 14:18 in Ryan Events

Recently I hosted a Small Business Community Forum with Tony Abbott, Bruce Billson, Shadow Minister for Small Business and Teresa Gambaro MP, Federal Member for Brisbane,to meet and listen to local small businesses in our community. With over 150 people in attendance, the event was an overwhelming success. It was very clear that small businesses feel they are not being heard by the Gillard Government.

Wesley Breast Clinic Volunteers RCSA Presentation

Tuesday, 08 March 2011 14:10 in Ryan Events

I recently had the pleasure of recognising the work of the volunteers at The Wesley Breast Clinic by presenting them with a Ryan Community Service Award. The Ryan Community Service Awards are an initiative to recognise the efforts of many local volunteers who we have in Ryan, from many different community organisations.

Their hard work, patience and compassion are a testament to them all. The patients and families of The Wesley Breast Clinic continue to tell me what valuable support the volunteers provide. The work they do at The Wesley is very generous of heart and of time. They assist in transporting patients, assisting reception and providing a general caring spirit in difficult and uncertain times. The volunteers of The Wesley Breast Clinic were a very worthy recipient of a Ryan Community Service Award.

Ryan School Leader Badge Presentations

Wednesday, 02 March 2011 14:15 in Ryan Events

As your local Federal Member, at this time of year I am delighted to visit our local schools to meet and present leadership badges to the new school captains and leaders. I have been so impressed with the calibre of our young leaders throughout Ryan, and would like to congratulate these students on dedicating themselves to representing their peers through standing for office at their school. I would also like to mention the Principals, teachers, and support staff at each of the schools who have made the Leadership Ceremonies as special as they have been. At each event I have been touched by the great community feel and school spirit, and it has been wonderful to meet so many proud parents and friends of our next generation of leaders. I wish our school leaders around the electorate all the very best for the coming year.

Working alongside Glenleighden School

Tuesday, 01 March 2011 14:17 in Ryan Events

I have recently been involved with the Glenleighden School’s campaign to raise awareness of Primary Language Disorder, and have it recognised by the Government as a disability. PLD is a developmental disorder that affects how a child thinks about, understands, and uses language. Catering for children with severe speech and language impairment, Glenleighden is the only one of its kind, providing invaluable support, assistance, and education for children with a serious disability. The Executive Principal Ms Vikki Rose Graydon and the CHI.L.D Association are currently seeking to have Primary Language Disorder included under the Better Start For Children with a Disability initiative. I commend the efforts of the Glenleighden School, and implore the Prime Minister to take this recommendation on board and recognise that PLD is a disability.
