BCC Makes Roads Safer For Schools

11 January, 2010

Brisbane City Council is continuing to make the roads around Brisbane schools safer with another 16 schools chosen for $2 million of safety improvements for the year 2011 – 12.

Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure Chair Graham Quirk said Civic Cabinet had approved the schools to be targeted under Council’s Safe School Travel (SafeST) program today.

“We’re committed to improving road safety for students, parents and teachers and have identified $2 million of safety improvements across Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“New footpaths, bike paths, bus bays and crossings can improve road safety and also help encourage drivers to walk, cycle or take the bus, which reduces congestion on our roads.”

BCC’s 16 schools must be approved by the State Government before work can start. Funding is split 50 / 50 between Council and State.

Schools put forward by BCC for bus and passenger improvements: Brisbane Boys College, Brookfield State School, Moorooka State School, Nudgee Junior College, Queen of Apostles, Runcorn High, St Martin’s, Watson Road State School, and Wavell High.

Schools for pedestrian and cycling improvements: Carina State School, Islamic School, Our Lady of Angels, Our Lady of the Assumption, Stafford Heights State School, West End State School and Windsor State School.

SafeST projects around schools can include:
• bus indent bays
• footpath improvements
• bike paths; and
• crossing, kerb build-outs and pedestrian safety islands
