Local sporting champions can still get a boost

Jane Prentice MP, Federal Member for Ryan, is calling on parents, friends and coaches of promising junior sportspeople to apply for Local Sporting Champions grants, which are provided by the Federal Government and administered by the Australian Sports Commission.

‘Supporting a strong sporting interest can strain family finances. Rather than have individuals and teams miss out on State and National opportunities, I am working with the Australian Sports Commission to support aspiring athletes achieve their goals and reach their sporting potential,’ said Mrs. Prentice.

Many promising young local athletes and teams have benefited from Local Sporting Champions grants in the recent past including:

• Aska and Kei Connell from Kenmore, who were able to compete in the Australian National Judo Championships because of the help of a Local Sporting Champions grant. This was a great achievement and experience for the boys.

• Breakers under 14 Girls Water Polo team based in Fig Tree Pocket, were able to make the trip to Canberra with the help of a Local Sporting Champions team grant to compete in the Under 14 Water Polo National Club Championships.

"Keeping young people active and engaged in sport is so important for their development as individuals and strengthens the whole community." said Mrs Prentice.

‘Participants prioritising their time and effort is difficult enough without the added financial pressures of today.”

The Local Sporting Champions program supports individuals and teams and covers travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment costs. The program offers individuals $500 and teams $3000 in funding.

‘We want as many young sportspeople as possible living up to their potential. The results are evident in the constant reports of enjoyment and success.”

Successful applicants in Ryan are selected by the Federal Member in conjunction with the Australian Sports Commission.
