“Volunteers really are the lifeblood of our community. Next week, more than ever, I want to acknowledge the crucial role played by volunteers in our community,” Jane Prentice MP, Federal Member for Ryan said today.
Mrs Prentice has paid tribute to volunteers across the Ryan electorate ahead of International Volunteer Day 2011 on Monday 5 December and thanked them for their outstanding service to the community.
“In so many instances volunteer groups are the glue that holds our community’s together in both the good times and the bad. You only have to look at the amazing contribution from local residents and groups during the Brisbane floods earlier this year,” Mrs Prentice said.
“International Volunteer day is a great opportunity for all Australians to take some time out to reflect on the invaluable work of volunteers and community organisations and to thank them for the tireless efforts and dedication.”
“From the time I was elected to public office over a decade ago, I have always done all I can to support local community, not-for-profit and volunteer groups in our community,” Mrs Prentice said.
“Around the country 5.4 million Australians give up some of their time to volunteer, contributing over 700 million hours of voluntary work a year. It would be fair to say that in our electorate of Ryan we certainly provide more than our fair share to the nation-wide effort.”
“So many volunteers in our community contribute to society in various and unique ways. On International Volunteer Day I thank them for their service and encourage all local residents to volunteer in some way, and get involved,” Mrs Prentice concluded.
