About Walter Taylor Ward

The Walter Taylor Ward covers Indooroopilly, Fig Tree Pocket,
Taringa, parts of Chapel Hill and St Lucia. The Ward is situated in
Brisbane's south-west and mixes inner-city medium density units and
townhouses in the suburbs of Taringa and Indooroopilly, with the
country feel of large blocks of land in Fig Tree Pocket. The Ward has a
mix of hilly terrain and flat plains, with a prevalence of large
Queenslander character homes and leafy green suburban streets.
The Ward takes its name from a local resident and engineer who was
instrumental in the construction of the Graceville Uniting Church and
the historic Indooroopilly Bridge, which was later renamed in his
honour. Opened in 1936, the Walter Taylor Bridge links Indooroopilly
and the suburbs in Brisbane's north with Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood
and Corinda in the south.
Walter Taylor's dominant natural feature is the Brisbane River,
which both splits and borders the Ward. Other natural features include
Moore Park at Indooroopilly.
Walter Taylor has a diverse population with people coming from all
walks of life. Because of their proximity to the University of
Queensland, Indooroopilly and Taringa have large seasonal student
populations. Other suburbs in the Ward, including Chapel Hill and Fig
Tree Pocket, have a high percentage of families and professionals.
Walter Taylor's residents are among Brisbane's most community minded
with a wide range of support groups and organisations actively working
for the benefit of their neighbourhoods. Bushcare, parks and
recreational groups are common, as are community groups such as Lions,
Rotary, Girl Guides and Scouts. Walter Taylor is alive with activity
and brimming with community spirit. To stay in touch with the local
commuinty, sign up for the Walter Taylor e-newsletter.
The Ward has a number of thriving suburban business centres,
dominated by the Indooroopilly business district centered on Station
Road and Coonan Street.
One of Brisbane's only public golf courses is situated in Walter
Taylor on the corner of Indooroopilly Road and Hillside Terrace. Other
sporting and recreational grounds include the Cubberla Creek Reserve on
Fig Tree Pocket Road in Chapel Hill and Jack Speare Park in
Indooroopilly.
